Today was an amazing day for me. DCF participated in a shoe drive for the soles 4 souls organization. I was so excited to watch person after person walk in the door ready to take their shoes off and leave them at the door in an act of worship. Even the children were involved, leaving their shoes at the foot of the table, the table where we share communion every week.
But I have to say there is two moments of today that will forever stick out in my mind. Just before we prayed I asked people to stay behind and help me put rubber bands aroung the pairs of shoes brought in bags. Just as quickly as we ended, I watched as the band joined together on the stage with the bags that were nearby. I looked out the window and saw a line of people actively putting rubber bands around the shoes that were in the bags lining the wall outside. These are just shoes, but today I saw the love that exists in our community. I saw the willingness to bring communities together world wide, and I was so full of joy. Small acts of generosity add up to makes waves in the world, and I felt the pulse today.
The other moment that was so beautiful happened at lunch. While standing in line to order a mere sandwich at Quizno's, I looked over at my friend Erin and noticed her feet, only covered in socks. Like many before her today, Erin took off her shoes and walked out the door. Unlike many, she walked shoeless downtown. It was a picture perfect moment to see Erin continue to worship through lunch, to taste only a brief moment in time of what it would be like to live without shoes.
